Okay, so I admit I haven't been the biggest follower of football this year and the only reason is that the Colts are not doing well...at all. Our record is worse than the Vikings....the Colts were most definitely missing their star quarterback, Peyton Manning. In honor of the upcoming superbowl (February 5) and to please some of the boys in my class I came up with a couple football orientated activities! : D
The first project is a football tossing game! (Be sure to model proper form for your students. ; ] ) You will need small foam footballs for this game. I simply wrote popcorn or sight words on the football. When students catch the football they must record the sight word that their right thumb landed on/or closest to! Here is the recording sheet! Enjoy! They will be so proud of their touch down passes!
The second activity, Tally Up The Score will require a little bit of preparation on your part. You will need to either color or copy the football players on colored paper. Students pick a football player, read the number and record the number in tallies on the recording sheet.
And one more.... Coin Flip...er, maybe it's a toss...just like at the game. :D Make two sided coins out of cardboard or other think and durable material. Students flip their coins and count the green and red. This activity allows them to see that different combinations make up the same number (addition). I will only use 5 coins.
